Recently, I was very hungry and I walked into a submarine sandwich shop
in which there were no customers. The prices in this shop were pretty
high and I was hungry enough to pay the high prices. I stood in front
of the counter for at least three minutes before the person behind the
counter (with absolutely no customers mind you) even acknowledged that I
existed. Even after barely acknowledging my presence with a passing
glance, it was at least another minute before this person looked my way
barely indicating that he was ready to take my order. Still having not
yet been spoken to, I placed my order as he slowly and
unenthusiastically began to fix my sandwich as though it was painful to
him. Then he immediately disappeared and after a minute or more another
unenthusiastic person (probably the manager) slowly walked in, never
looked at me directly, finished my sandwich and only spoke barely enough
to give me the price of my order. I forced her to speak when I asked,
"How are you today"? She quietly muttered "Okay" under her breath still
never looking at me directly in the eye. As she barely handed me my
food, I gave her my money and said "Thank You" and left without her
saying one more word to me and certainly not looking at me. All this
time, I was asking myself why I had not gone to the submarine sandwich
shop I really like where the last time I had been a person stood eagerly
and anxiously behind the counter looking at me before I entered the
door. This person stood poised like a cat with pen in hand anxiously
ready to take my order and eagerly answer my questions. Behind him a
person rapidly began to cook the hot meal for my family and I and before
I knew it this person brought the hot delicious food straight to our
table and offered further service. This was not even a table service
restaurant. Which sandwich shop do you think I WILL go back to? Which
sandwich shop do you think I WILL NEVER go back to? In the restaurant
business is it said that people will go where the atmosphere is warm and
the food is hot! Many people will flock to and fill up a church where
the atmosphere is warm and the food is hot! Nowhere should the
atmosphere be warmer and the food hotter than in Jesus' church where
God's precious word is served. You are on the front lines of Jesus'
church. You will make the difference! Be very aggressive, be present
every Sunday, be at your post early, go get 'em before they even get to
the door and make sure the atmosphere is very warm because the food will
be hot! We are always in need of people who will come get together with
us to make sure the atmosphere is warm! Come help us today!
Sincerely,
Frank Ingram, Jr., Pastoral Care Pastor
